Members of the Legislative Delegation from New Jersey have expressed concerns regarding recent drone sightings in the state. They attended a meeting where the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness briefed them on these reports.
The delegation had previously reached out to both the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, seeking information to address constituent concerns. However, they noted that despite law enforcement’s professionalism during the briefing, no conclusive answers were provided about the drones’ operations. It was stressed that there is currently no known credible threat associated with these drones.
Law enforcement agencies have been actively investigating for over three weeks, facing challenges such as distinguishing drones from manned aircraft mistakenly reported as drones. Additionally, it was noted that shooting down a drone is a federal crime.
The delegation emphasized the need for national intelligence agencies to enhance coordination with state and local authorities due to increasing drone sightings and public concern. They urged state authorities to be more responsive in addressing public alarm.
They assured constituents that they would continue collaborating with state officials and law enforcement to find answers regarding any actions necessary for public safety or national security if deemed necessary.
