Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco and Senate Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon have issued a statement criticizing the current state of New Jersey’s local public employee health benefits program. They attribute its challenges to what they describe as “one-party Democrat rule in Trenton.”

“The death spiral of the insolvent local public employee health benefits program is just the latest symptom of one-party Democrat rule in Trenton,” said Sens. Bucco and O’Scanlon. They argue that by excluding Republican input, Democrats are ignoring the needs of over 3.5 million New Jersey residents who depend on essential state services.

The senators emphasize that effective governance requires diverse viewpoints, stating, “Opposition voices aren’t just there to disagree. They’re there to challenge, scrutinize, and ultimately improve public policy.” They assert that including Republicans in decision-making processes would benefit all New Jerseyans.

The statement highlights several instances where Republicans had previously warned about potential issues under Democratic leadership:

– In January 2023, Sen. Bucco expressed concerns about Governor Phil Murphy’s green energy plan’s costs after reports indicated more households were living paycheck to paycheck.
– In July 2023, Sen. Bucco criticized a lack of transparency and fiscal management in a New Jersey Transit deal for a new headquarters.
– In February 2024, Sen. O’Scanlon urged Governor Murphy to consider Republican proposals addressing affordability issues.
– Also in February 2024, Sen. O’Scanlon opposed cuts to state aid for public schools and questioned the school funding formula.
– In October 2024, Sen. Bucco condemned legislation allowing borrowing from the State employees’ health benefit fund instead of seeking long-term solutions.

Senator Declan O’Scanlon first referred to the situation as a ‘death spiral’, stating: “Republicans have been warning of the looming death spiral facing our public benefits system.”

Bucco and O’Scanlon conclude their statement with an expression of frustration: “We hate to say we told you so…but we told you so!!!”
