New Jersey DOT names Juan Carlos Nordelo as chief of staff

Juan Carlos Nordelo has been appointed as Chief of Staff at the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), according to an announcement by Acting Commissioner Priya Jain. Nordelo joins the department with a background in public service, legislative leadership, nonprofit advocacy, and community engagement.

“Juan Carlos brings a rare combination of policy expertise, operational perspective, and lived experience working directly with communities across New Jersey,” said Acting Commissioner Jain. “His ability to navigate complex issues, build partnerships across all levels of government, and focus on practical solutions will be a tremendous asset as NJDOT advances its mission to deliver safe, reliable, and resilient transportation systems for the people of New Jersey.”

In his new role as Chief of Staff, Nordelo will work closely with the Acting Commissioner to advance NJDOT’s strategic goals. He will also coordinate efforts across divisions and partner agencies to ensure that the department’s policies and operations address the needs of state residents.

“It is an honor to join NJDOT and support the critical work being done every day to keep New Jersey moving,” said Nordelo. “Throughout my career, I have focused on bringing people together, understanding the real challenges communities face, and turning those challenges into actionable solutions. I look forward to working with the talented professionals across this Department to continue advancing safety, resiliency, and quality of life for our residents.”

Before joining NJDOT, Nordelo served as Chief of Staff and Policy Director for Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez from the 19th District. In that position he led legislative strategy and managed policy initiatives focused on affordability, safety, infrastructure improvements, and overall quality of life in New Jersey.

Nordelo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from Rutgers University and a Master of Public Administration from Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs. He resides in Cranford with his wife Maria Luisa and their son Sebastian.
