The New Jersey Devils held their final team meeting and exit interviews on April 16, reflecting on a season that began with promise but ended without a playoff berth. Players and staff acknowledged both the highs and lows of the year, which saw an early winning streak give way to struggles in the middle of the campaign.

The significance of this reflection is underscored by high expectations entering the season, as well as changes already underway in team leadership. The club finished with a 42-37-3 record for 87 points, missing the playoffs by ten points.

Captain Nico Hischier said, “Very disappointing. Not the year that we hoped, or we wanted. Unfortunately, it is what it is right now. We have to take the right things out of it and move on.” Jack Hughes added, “Obviously, not where we want to be. You want to be a team whose season is still going on. It’s a frustrating year and we’re not where we want to be.”

The Devils started strong with an eight-game winning streak and led their division by mid-November before injuries and inconsistent play caused them to fall out of contention during a stretch where they went 14-23-1. Forward Jesper Bratt commented on the disappointment: “This year stings the most out of every year where I’ve been in this situation because of the anticipation from before the year, expectations and the group that we have… It’s frustrating. It’s not a fun day right now.”

Head coach Sheldon Keefe addressed both challenges and opportunities for growth: “Some of it is the personnel and building a more resilient team… but growth inside the locker room for players that remain is equally important.” Veteran goalie Jake Allen reflected on how close they were: “It’s easy to look back and say you could’ve had a four- or five-game difference in… points or overtimes, then you’re right there in playoffs.”

Looking forward, change at management level has already begun after general manager Tom Fitzgerald parted ways with the organization earlier this month. Hischier noted his hope for new leadership: “All I can hope is that it’s somebody that can bring the team forward.” Keefe said he wants “to be part of the solution here” regardless who takes over as general manager.

Players stressed their belief in each other despite setbacks. Bratt said: “I have a lot of belief in this group… If we take this [the] right way I think we’ll be a lot stronger (coming) out of this.” Dawson Mercer added: “We do believe in our group… confidence for us.” Free agent Connor Brown pointed out championship potential within current roster members.

With another offseason ahead filled with uncertainty about roster moves or coaching decisions, goaltender Jacob Markstrom emphasized personal responsibility during summer training while others like Bratt expressed commitment toward finding solutions together.

Reflecting broader league trends where successful teams experience ups-and-downs before achieving championships—such as Florida Panthers’ recent journey—the Devils aim to build sustainable success moving forward.

As Allen concluded: “Consistency gets you into playoffs… Consistency builds a really strong competitive organization for long time… reflection is step one then get back to it September.” Hughes echoed those ambitions stating: “This [is] not expectation or standard we want set… We need raise bar way higher… starts with guys training summer showing up camp excited ready have fun year.”
