The State Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee has approved a bill, SJR-146, to designate June 1 annually as “Robert ‘Bob’ Popovics Day” in New Jersey. The legislation was introduced by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre.

The 9th District Legislative Delegation expressed their appreciation for the progress of their initiative to honor Bob Popovics. They stated: “We are grateful that the first step in the legislative process to officially establish a ‘Bob Popovics Day’ in our state was successful. The fact that the Committee passed our legislation unanimously with bipartisan sponsorship is a testament to the respect Bob earned throughout his life as a veteran, loving family man, successful entrepreneur and legendary fisherman.”

They also acknowledged Senator Paul Sarlo’s role: “We want to thank Senator Paul Sarlo, who serves as Chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriation Committee, for joining as a prime sponsor on the bill and for advancing the legislation through Committee.”

The Delegation noted Bob Popovics’ significant contributions: “Bob lived a truly remarkable life and will be missed by many. His kindness and commitment to the community should be recognized at a statewide level, which is the intent of our Delegation’s legislative effort.”

The resolution designates June 1 each year as “Robert ‘Bob’ Popovics Day” in New Jersey. It highlights Bob’s life journey from being born in Trenton to residing in Seaside Park. On November 1, 2024, he passed away at age 75 due to injuries from an accident.

His service with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War is recognized alongside his entrepreneurial achievements with Shady Rest restaurant and his renowned status in fly fishing circles through Pop Fleyes company.

Currently, SJR-146 awaits further reading in the Senate while its counterpart measure AJR-209 is pending review by the Assembly State and Local Government Committee.
