The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee has approved a bill proposed by Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco, representing the 25th district. The legislation aims to expand the list of state-excused school absences in New Jersey. This expansion would include students who have enlisted or plan to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard and need to participate in military recruitment-related activities during school hours.
“As a proud supporter of our military, it is essential that we recognize and encourage the commitment of young New Jerseyans who choose to serve our country,” said Sen. Bucco. “This bill ensures that students who are enlisted or planning to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard are not penalized for participating in important military recruitment-related activities during school hours.”
Currently, state-excused absences cover religious observances, participation in Veterans Day observations, involvement in school district board election membership activities, Take Our Children to Work Day, college visits for students in grades 11 and 12 up to three days per year, and situations where a closure of a busing school district prevents transportation to the receiving school.
“By expanding the list of state-excused absences, we are giving these students the opportunity to pursue their dreams of service while also honoring their dedication to protecting our nation’s future,” Sen. Bucco concluded.
