The Senate Economic Growth Committee has passed a bipartisan bill, sponsored by Senator Joe Pennacchio and Senator Andrew Zwicker, aimed at fostering the development of fusion energy in New Jersey. The legislation proposes a tax credit program to stimulate investment in this emerging energy sector.
Senator Pennacchio emphasized the global race for fusion technology, stating, “Nations across the globe are investing heavily in fusion technology as the race accelerates to develop an unlimited and environmentally friendly source of energy.” He added that New Jersey could become a leader in this field by attracting innovators and companies with strategic tax incentives. According to him, such measures could help integrate fusion into the state’s energy landscape and provide future generations with “clean, abundant safe energy.”
The bill, identified as S-4070, seeks to establish the Fusion Energy and Technology Incentive Program. This program would offer tax credits to promote the growth of the fusion energy industry within the state. Property owners leasing space to eligible power plants could receive up to $5 million annually in tax credits. Companies operating fusion facilities at these sites might qualify for up to $10 million in credits.
Furthermore, additional financial support would be available through the Global Warming Solutions Fund for various fusion energy projects. Senator Pennacchio has been actively promoting New Jersey as a hub for fusion research and development through several legislative efforts.
Two other bills by Senator Pennacchio, S-364 and S-366, have made progress over the past year, contributing further support for funding fusion energy initiatives.
