Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation to ban player-specific proposition bets on collegiate sports has advanced through the State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation committee in New Jersey. The bill aims to address concerns over harassment and integrity in college sports.

“Proposition bets have led to a rise in the harassment of student-athletes and have threatened the integrity of college sports,” said Senator Corrado. She emphasized that individuals have faced online harassment for not meeting bettors’ expectations. “This legislation will ban player-specific prop betting in New Jersey, which will help curb that appalling behavior, and make college athletic events safer for all participants.”

The bill, S-3080, defines a proposition bet as a side wager unrelated to the outcome of an event. Examples include statistical performance lines or predicting which player will score first.

Similar bans on college proposition betting exist in several states, with Ohio, Maryland, and Louisiana being among the most recent to enact such measures.
