The Murphy Administration has announced the allocation of $44 million in Local Bridges Fund grants for fiscal year 2025. These funds are aimed at helping counties across New Jersey maintain their local bridges. A total of 38 grants have been awarded to support this initiative.
Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the importance of investing in local infrastructure to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system. “To ensure New Jersey has a safe, modern, and efficient transportation system, we must continue to invest in local infrastructure,” he said. He also noted that the Local Bridges Fund alleviates pressure on local property taxes by providing necessary resources for bridge improvements.
NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor highlighted the impact of these investments on the state’s transportation network. “These critical local infrastructure investments improve the reliability of our statewide transportation network and are just one example of the Murphy Administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life in New Jersey,” O’Connor said.
The Local Bridges Fund is supported by the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) and provides funding for all 21 counties in New Jersey. Each county receives a base amount of $1 million, with additional funds distributed based on factors such as total bridge deck area and condition. The program focuses on repairing, reconstructing, and replacing structurally deficient bridges.
Since its inception in 2009, the fund has facilitated improvements to 590 bridges. The NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development administers these grants, which are evaluated by the Division of Bridge Engineering and Infrastructure Management.
