The Township of Livingston announced on May 14 that it will hold its first free Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event on Sunday, June 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, located at 204 Hillside Avenue.

This event is intended to help residents comply with New Jersey state law and the township’s recycling ordinance, which require electronic items to be recycled rather than placed at the curb for pickup. The garbage and recycling collection trucks will not collect these items.

The event is open only to residents of Livingston and offers drive-through service for safe disposal of unwanted electronics as well as confidential paper shredding. Volunteers wearing safety vests will guide vehicles through the parking lot and remove electronic items from each resident’s car while participants remain inside their vehicles for safety reasons.

A wide range of electronics will be accepted, including cellular telephones (with hard drives or memory erased), computers and components, monitors (except those with broken glass or sharp edges), televisions (no broken glass), printers, scanners, DVD players, radios, typewriters (electric), VCRs, keyboards, laptops, fax machines, copiers, telecom equipment and more. Electronic items are accepted whether they are working or not; however TVs or screens with broken glass must be brought to Essex County’s Household Hazardous Waste Disposal days instead.

Paper shredding services are also available exclusively for residents who may bring up to five boxes of confidential documents per household. Home-based businesses or institutions cannot use this service. Residents should note that hard-cover books, three-ring binders, CDs and computer disks are not accepted for shredding during this event.

Early drop-off for electronics only is available in Craft Room 1 at the same location on Friday June 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday June 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The township also accepts unbroken fluorescent bulbs but does not accept exercise equipment or hazardous materials at this event.

The next scheduled Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event in Livingston will take place on Saturday October 24.
