Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf, and Assemblyman Gregory E. Myhre have expressed their support for Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s proposed legislation aimed at eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security payments.

“Removing the requirement that Social Security benefits be considered taxable income would provide desperately needed tax relief to many retirees,” stated the delegation in their letter.

The full text of the letter reads:

Dear Congressman Van Drew,

In representing the interests of our mutual constituents, our Delegation wholeheartedly supports your legislation H.R. 9359, The Social Security Tax Freedom Act, which would remove federal income taxes on Social Security payments.

As you are aware, seniors comprise a large segment of our respective constituencies, many of whom rely heavily on Social Security to pay their most basic expenses including housing, food and utilities. Removing the requirement that Social Security benefits be considered taxable income would provide desperately needed tax relief to many retirees.

Certainly, our Delegation will discuss your legislative initiative with our constituents in an effort to build additional support for its enactment. In closing, thank you for all your efforts on behalf of seniors and all the people of New Jersey.

Sincerely,
Carmen F. Amato, Jr.
Brian E. Rumpf
Gregory E. Myhre
