Route 1&9/Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen will have lane closures on Monday, December 22, as part of ongoing work for the Hudson Tunnel Project within the Gateway Program. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that a single northbound lane will be closed between Taco Bell and Route 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. During this period, one lane will remain open and southbound traffic will not be affected. This closure is intended for restriping and other preparatory work ahead of an overnight traffic shift.
Further closures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Monday night and continue until 5 a.m. Tuesday, December 23. One northbound lane in the same section will again be closed while crews shift traffic onto a newly constructed bridge deck and establish a center work zone for building a new median barrier. One lane will remain open throughout this time, with no impact on southbound lanes. The new configuration is expected to last several weeks.
The Hudson Tunnel Project is part of the larger Gateway Program, which aims to replace and upgrade rail infrastructure along a ten-mile stretch of the Northeast Corridor, including constructing a new two-track rail tunnel under the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan. More information about the project can be found at www.gatewayprogram.org.
Officials advise motorists to drive cautiously through work zones and expect possible delays during construction periods. NJDOT also recommends checking its real-time traffic website at www.511nj.org for updates regarding road conditions or changes due to weather or other factors.
