Overnight lane and ramp closures are planned on Route 42 northbound, I-295 northbound, and I-76 eastbound next week in Bellmawr, Camden County, for structural steel installation as part of the Direct Connection project.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on May 30 that three left lanes on Route 42 northbound will be closed between Leaf Avenue (mile post 13.8) and where Route 42 splits to I-76 westbound and I-295 northbound (mile post 14.2). These closures will occur from 10 p.m. Monday, June 1, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, continuing each night through Thursday, June 4, at the same time. Additional overnight closures are scheduled for Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
I-295 northbound will see the left lane before Exit 27A and the Exit 27A ramp to I-76 westbound closed during similar overnight hours Monday through Thursday next week. At least two lanes are expected to remain open during these times; however, only one lane will be maintained during some periods over the weekend. Motorists wishing to take Exit 27A to I-76 westbound will be directed instead to continue on I-295 northbound and use Exit 27B.
On I-76 eastbound before the new Browning Road Bridge and at Exit 1A ramp to I-295 southbound, additional lane and ramp closures are planned with detours provided via exits such as Exit 1B or secondary routes including CR544/Route 41/Deptford/Woodbury/Runnemede corridors.
Traffic slowdowns are also anticipated each night beginning at approximately mile post 26.3 through mile post 26.7 on I-295 northbound between Creek Road/CR753 Overpass and Browning Road/CR659 Overpass, with assistance from New Jersey State Police.
The Direct Connection project aims to provide a seamless route for motorists traveling through this interchange area of Camden County. The Department advises drivers to use caution in work zones due to potential delays; updates can be found by signing up at the project website or by following NJDOT social media accounts.
