Joyce M. Malliet has been appointed First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer announced on Apr. 29 in Newark, New Jersey. In her new role, Malliet will serve as the Office’s second-ranking official and assist in leading its operations and mission throughout the district.
“Joyce Malliet is an exceptional prosecutor, leader, and public servant whose career reflects an unwavering commitment to justice and the people of New Jersey. For nearly twenty-four years, she has served this Office with distinction, and I am confident that her experience, judgment, and dedication will continue to strengthen our mission and support the outstanding work of our prosecutors and staff,” Frazer said.
Malliet has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for nearly twenty-four years and currently serves as Chief of the National Security Unit, becoming the first woman to lead that section. During her tenure, she has helped lead efforts to prevent, disrupt, and prosecute threats to national security and terrorism. She previously worked in the Special Prosecutions Division as well as the Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit within the office.
Malliet has also been involved with ReNew Re-Entry Court initiatives supporting formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrating into society. Before joining public service, she was noted as being the first African-American partner at Clausen Miller P.C., a Trustee of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey, and a founding member of the Black Prosecutors Association of New Jersey.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey prosecutes federal crimes across New Jersey; represents federal interests in civil matters; staffs about 170 attorneys and support personnel; operates offices in Newark, Trenton, and Camden; advances community safety through law enforcement coordination; is part of the Department of Justice; includes alumni who have become federal judges or senators, according to its official website.
