Two lanes on I-80 westbound in Wharton, Morris County, are set to reopen late Friday night, May 30, weather permitting. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will provide an update once the lanes are open. Work in the median is progressing with all lanes in both directions scheduled to reopen by June 25.

The paving on I-80 westbound is expected to be completed late Thursday night, May 29, or early Friday morning. The roadway needs to cool and harden before striping can occur, which depends on dry weather conditions. A barrier curb will be installed to separate the median work zone from traffic. Once reopened, the detour using Exit 34B will be removed, and the speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph.

Concrete pours for all six median slabs are complete. The next steps include applying sealant and paving multiple asphalt layers. Median work is anticipated to progress slower due to logistical challenges in a smaller work zone surrounded by live traffic. All lanes remain on schedule for reopening by June 25.

On I-80 eastbound, two lanes reopened Wednesday night, May 21, with the removal of the detour using Exit 34. The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph through this active work zone.

NJDOT encourages motorists to slow down and exercise caution in these areas. Updates on repairs and traffic information can be found on NJDOT’s website and social media platforms.
