While conducting routine boring tests on I-80 eastbound in Wharton, Morris County, NJDOT crews encountered a significant setback when road conditions worsened, leading to the formation of a sinkhole. Crews are currently working to assess the damage and undertake necessary repairs. The site of the new sinkhole is located 75 feet from an area where a previous sinkhole was repaired in December, which remains stable.
NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor stated, “Emergency repairs are always dynamic situations, and conditions can change quickly. While conducting tests of the roadway to determine the extent of the damage, conditions worsened.” He emphasized that crews will work tirelessly until repairs are completed and highlighted efforts to minimize traffic impact on local communities. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
Senator Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) shared his observations after visiting the site earlier in the day with Commissioner O’Connor. “At that time, it seemed like the damage could be repaired quickly,” he said. However, further investigations revealed more severe issues than initially anticipated. Senator Bucco urged patience from travelers and residents as crews work diligently on repairs while ensuring public safety.
The eastbound lanes of I-80 remain closed until further notice, with traffic being rerouted at Exit 34. Drivers are encouraged to use Exit 28 for alternate routes via Route 46 or Route 10 eastbound. Variable Message Signs will provide updates on traffic pattern changes due to ongoing repair work.
