The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that the closure and detour of the I-76 westbound Exit 1D ramp to Route 130 northbound in Gloucester City, Camden County, will be extended until late April.
The extension is needed to complete drainage repairs that were delayed by severe winter weather, including major storms in January and February. The ramp has been closed since January 19 and was originally expected to reopen in late March.
According to the department, the ramp becomes the right lane on Route 130 northbound, which is also closed for about one-tenth of a mile. One lane remains open on Route 130 northbound, and the left exit from Route 130 northbound to I-76 westbound/Walt Whitman/Ben Franklin Bridge remains accessible. The repair involves replacing a collapsed corrugated metal drainage pipe with a ductile iron pipe. Sheeting was installed during construction to support a sound wall. Work has been taking place around the clock except when severe weather prevented progress.
The closure will stay in effect until late April unless work finishes earlier. Motorists traveling on I-76 westbound or Route 42 northbound who wish to access Exit 1D are directed instead to take Exit 1B for I-295 north toward Trenton about one and a quarter miles before Exit 1D. From there, drivers should continue onto I-295 north, take Exit 28 for Route 168/Bellmawr/Runnemede/Mt Ephraim, turn left onto Black Horse Pike (Route 168) northbound, then use the ramp for Route 130 northbound.
This project is part of a $7.1 million stormwater maintenance contract aimed at improving drainage facilities across several counties including Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem.
Motorists are encouraged by NJDOT officials to check www.511nj.org for updates on construction and real-time travel information.
