The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 2 that several I-676 southbound exits in Camden and Gloucester City will be closed and detoured overnight as part of a bridge replacement and paving project. The closures are scheduled for the nights of April 1 and April 2, with detours provided for affected motorists.

These closures are necessary to allow saw cutting in preparation for upcoming drainage work related to a $73.2 million federally funded bridge replacement and pavement improvement project. The project aims to replace multiple bridges over Newton Creek and Nicholson Road, improve safety, upgrade pavement conditions, replace noise barriers, update sign structures, and install intelligent transportation systems throughout the corridor.

On Wednesday night, April 1 from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Thursday morning, Exit 1C to Collings Avenue/Gloucester will be closed. Motorists will be directed via detour routes using Exits 1A and other ramps back toward their destinations. On Thursday night, April 2 from 11 p.m. until Friday at 5 a.m., Exit 1B to Collings Avenue/Collingswood as well as the Collings Road ramp to I-676 southbound will also be closed with similar detour instructions provided.

Most construction activity is expected to occur off the roadway initially with drainage improvements underway first; however, shoulder closures may occasionally be required. Construction of precast bridge deck panels is anticipated later this year off-site while actual bridge deck replacements are set for 2026—these works will require additional lane closures which will be communicated in advance by NJDOT.

Variable Message Signs along I-676 will notify drivers about changes in traffic patterns due to ongoing construction activities. The department cautions that schedules may change depending on weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Motorists can check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information or follow NJDOT on social media platforms including X (Twitter), Facebook, or Instagram for updates.
