Overnight lane and shoulder closures are scheduled this week on I-295 in both directions near the Route 206 interchange in Lawrence, Mercer County. The closures mark the start of a noise barrier installation project managed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

On Tuesday, December 2, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, the right lane and shoulder on I-295 northbound and southbound will be closed between mile post 69.4 and mile post 70. On Wednesday night, similar closures will affect only the southbound side during the same hours. Thursday night will see left lane and shoulder closures on northbound I-295.

The NJDOT states that these overnight lane restrictions are necessary to place barriers and implement long-term shoulder closures for construction work. “The I-295 southbound right shoulder will be closed to construct noise barriers. The I-295 northbound right and left shoulder closures are necessary to construct retention basins.” All affected shoulders are expected to remain closed through spring 2026.

This construction is being coordinated with ongoing work related to the Princeton Pike Bridge over I-295 replacement project. More information about that project can be found at bit.ly/4piFKcc.

During these periods, at least one travel lane will remain open overnight in each direction. Motorists are advised by NJDOT to reduce speed, use caution, and expect delays when traveling through the area. If inclement weather occurs, work may shift to Friday night.

The $11.5 million project includes building noise barriers along I-295 southbound between mile posts 69.4 and 70 as well as constructing retention basins in the median and along northbound lanes. Completion is anticipated in late summer 2026.

Work schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen factors. For real-time traffic updates, drivers can visit www.511nj.org or follow NJDOT’s social media channels for further news.
