Bipartisan legislation aimed at enhancing mental health support for students in New Jersey has been signed into law. Sponsored by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. and Senator Joseph Cryan, the bill mandates that student identification cards include contact information for critical mental health and suicide prevention resources.
Senator Amato expressed gratitude to Senator Cryan for his collaboration, emphasizing the importance of protecting students’ well-being. “I want to sincerely thank Senator Cryan for his partnership, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of New Jersey’s youth,” said Amato. He highlighted the significance of providing accessible mental health support as a potential lifeline for those in distress.
Governor Murphy enacted the bill (S-3769/A-4897) on July 22, 2025. Previously, schools were required to print the number for the New Jersey Suicide Prevention Hopeline on student ID cards. The new law now includes the national suicide prevention hotline number, broadening access to essential resources.
