Today, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bipartisan bill into law that aims to support military families in New Jersey by extending grade options for dependents of military service members. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Parker Space, provides flexibility for these students when they are unable to complete college courses due to unforeseen circumstances.
Senator Space highlighted the significance of this measure, stating, “New Jersey is home to thousands of military families who are subject to unplanned obligations that can uproot their lives. Prior to this bill becoming law, only service members were granted the ability to decide the outcome of their grade if they were unable to finish a course. Now, with the governor’s signature, we’re extending that same courtesy to their dependents to ensure they receive the flexibility and support they deserve.”
The new law allows students who have completed at least 55 percent of a course to choose from several grading options: a letter grade, pass or fail grade, grade of incomplete, or withdrawal. For those who have completed less than 55 percent of the course, choices are limited to receiving an incomplete grade with faculty approval or withdrawing from the course.
