FOIA Request to New Jersey Council of County Colleges Regarding Financial Aid Fraud on May 7, 2025.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Garden State Times have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the New Jersey Council of County Colleges. Our request seeks detailed records concerning financial aid fraud within community colleges in New Jersey, following alarming reports from California where such fraud has become increasingly prevalent.

According to an article from CalMatters, California community colleges are grappling with escalating financial aid fraud, with bots accounting for a significant portion of fraudulent applications. These scammers, often referred to as “Pell runners,” exploit artificial intelligence to secure grants before disappearing, resulting in losses exceeding $5 million since 2021. Despite efforts to enhance detection measures, the fraud continues unabated, posing challenges to cybersecurity and overwhelming online classes.

In light of these developments, we have requested specific data points from the New Jersey Council of County Colleges regarding any tracking they may conduct on financial aid fraud. The information sought includes:

– College Name
– Applicant Name
– Fraud Amount
– Fraud Incident Date

Our role as members of the media involves gathering and reporting news that holds public institutions accountable while ensuring transparency for the public. Access to these records is crucial for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. We have also requested a fee waiver for this information due to our status as media professionals.

This request is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting news media companies and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.

We await a response from the New Jersey Council of County Colleges and will continue to update our readers on this important issue.
