The Election Transparency Initiative has expressed concerns over Virginia’s election laws, contrasting them with New Jersey’s more restrictive voting reforms. In a press release, the group participated in a Restoration News interview to critique Virginia’s policies, which they argue weaken election integrity.

According to Ballotpedia, since 2020, Virginia has implemented significant changes to its election laws. These include expanding early voting to 45 days, allowing same-day voter registration, and removing the requirement for voters to present a photo ID at polling stations. These reforms were introduced under Democratic legislative control following the 2019 elections and represent some of the most comprehensive changes in the state’s history. The Election Transparency Initiative contends that such measures increase the risk of administrative errors and undermine confidence in election results.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) provides a comparison with New Jersey, where early voting is limited to between six and nine days depending on the type of election. Additionally, New Jersey does not allow same-day registration; instead, voters must register at least 21 days before Election Day. This approach is designed to balance accessibility with verification processes. The Election Transparency Initiative praises New Jersey’s model as being more administratively sound compared to Virginia’s extended voting period.

The Heritage Foundation’s Election Integrity Scorecard ranks Virginia 47th out of 51 states for election security due to weak voter ID requirements and extensive early voting periods. In contrast, New Jersey ranks moderately higher because of its limited early voting and registration safeguards, although it still lacks photo ID mandates. The Election Transparency Initiative uses these findings to highlight disparities in how different states manage accessibility and security in their election systems.

Led by former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and affiliated with Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, the Election Transparency Initiative is a national advocacy project focused on restoring public confidence in U.S. elections through policies such as voter ID laws, restricted early voting periods, and stringent voter list maintenance. Its mission statement emphasizes “protecting every lawful vote and preventing every unlawful one” through both legislative efforts and grassroots action.
