Congressman Donald Norcross, who represents New Jersey’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of messages on social media highlighting historical and contemporary issues related to labor rights and food security.
On August 31, 2025, Norcross reflected on the legacy of federal nutrition assistance programs: “The Food Stamp Act of 1964 marked a turning point in the fight against hunger in America. For the first time, our nation recognized that access to food isn’t a privilege, it’s a right. Today, SNAP feeds over 40 million Americans. In another post dated September 1, 2025, Norcross commemorated Labor Day and emphasized ongoing efforts within Congress: “On Labor Day we honor the workers who built this nation. The @Labor_Caucus is more than 120 members strong and we are fighting every day to protect workers’ rights and lift up the labor movement in Congress. From our caucus to you, Happy Labor Day! https://t.co/MCywcAGWhB”.
Later that same day, he highlighted Peter J. McGuire’s contributions as an early labor leader from South Jersey: “South Jersey’s own, Peter J. McGuire, the ‘Father of Labor Day,’ showed us that progress for working people comes through organizing and fighting together. I wrote about his legacy and what we can learn from him about combating Trump’s harmful actions: https://t.co/89wQjag473”.
Norcross has represented New Jersey’s 1st District since replacing Rob Andrews in 2014. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in both the New Jersey General Assembly and Senate between 2010 and 2014. Born in Camden in 1958, Norcross continues to reside there while advocating for labor rights and anti-hunger initiatives.
