Congressman Donald Norcross, who represents New Jersey’s 1st district in the U.S. House of Representatives, used his social media platform on October 31, 2025, to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on Americans’ healthcare and food security.
In a post from October 31, Norcross stated, “Democrats are in DC, fighting to reopen the government and save your healthcare because those premium increases scare us all.”
On the same day, he addressed the lack of activity in Washington during the shutdown: “The scariest thing this Halloween is how empty Washington is during this government shutdown. 22 million Americans will see their health insurance premiums increase because Republicans refuse to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits & the Republicans are nowhere to be found.”
Later that afternoon, Norcross posted about potential impacts on New Jersey residents: “Trump’s shutdown is hurting people. Over 820,000 New Jerseyans, especially seniors, children, and working families, could go hungry next month because he refuses to release emergency SNAP funding. I joined my NJ colleagues in demanding he end this cruelty now.”
Norcross has represented New Jersey’s 1st congressional district since replacing Rob Andrews in 2014. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both the New Jersey General Assembly and State Senate. Born in Camden in 1958 and currently residing there at age 64, Norcross has maintained a longstanding involvement with local and state politics.
