The 86th Annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta commenced on Friday morning, marking the third consecutive year it has been held on the Cooper River rather than its traditional location at the Schuylkill River National Racecourse in Philadelphia. The event began with an opening bell ceremony attended by Commissioners and state and local officials, alongside representatives from the rowing community.
Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, who is connected to the Parks Department, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the regatta again. “Each year that the Dad Vail returns to the Cooper River, the event just grows bigger and better,” he stated. He also highlighted Cooper River Park’s reputation as a venue for prestigious rowing events, noting its Olympic-distance course.
According to estimates from Rowan University School of Business, local spending related to hotels, shopping, and dining due to the regatta significantly impacts Camden County’s economy. The financial benefit is estimated at nearly $10 million.
Nash emphasized efforts made by both the Board of Commissioners and the Parks Department in enhancing Cooper River Park’s appeal as a rowing destination. “As the park becomes more popular in the rowing world, we are seeing more and more money being injected into the Camden County regional economy as rowers from all over the nation descend to the racecourse,” he added.
Cooper River Park spans 346 acres across Pennsauken, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, and Haddon Township. It features various amenities including a boathouse, children’s playgrounds with pavilions, sports fields and courts, bike trails, a golf academy, yacht club facilities, picnic areas, and more.
