A bill aimed at bolstering cybersecurity measures for local governments and schools in New Jersey has moved forward in the legislative process. Sponsored by Senator Kristin M. Corrado, the bill known as S-3313 was approved by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee with support from both parties.
The legislation seeks to combat the rising threat of cyberattacks on local government bodies and educational institutions by implementing mandatory cybersecurity protocols. “The advancement of this bill is a vital step in ensuring that New Jersey’s government and public agencies are better equipped to confront the growing complexity and frequency of cyberattacks,” stated Senator Corrado. She emphasized that “cybersecurity is more than just a technological issue; it’s about safeguarding our communities, protecting sensitive data, and ensuring that essential public services continue to function in the face of escalating cyber threats.”
Key provisions of the bill include requiring the New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) to audit cybersecurity programs within municipalities, counties, and school districts within 30 days following a reported incident. Additionally, it mandates cybersecurity awareness training for all employees at these levels.
