The Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee passed Senator Kristin Corrado’s bipartisan bill on May 21 to prevent the Motor Vehicle Commission from prompting non-citizens to register to vote in New Jersey.
The bill aims to address concerns about election integrity by ensuring that only eligible voters are encouraged to register. The legislation seeks to clarify procedures at the Motor Vehicle Commission so that non-citizens are not inadvertently prompted during routine transactions.
“As a former county clerk, I understand the pressure our local election officials face to maintain accurate voter rolls while ensuring every eligible voter has easy access to the ballot box,” said Senator Corrado. “This legislation provides important clarity so the Motor Vehicle Commission is not prompting non-citizens to register to vote, which protects the integrity of our elections while preserving the easy and accessible voter registration process that eligible New Jersey voters currently enjoy.”
The full text of Senate Bill S-4132 is available for public review. According to the official website, Anthony M. Bucco serves as Senate Republican Leader and chairs key committees such as Judiciary and Budget and Appropriations in New Jersey’s legislature.
Looking ahead, supporters say this measure will help safeguard state elections by preventing administrative errors that could affect voter rolls. The bill now awaits further consideration by additional legislative bodies.
