On June 10, 2025, the Board of Commissioners revealed the newly renovated William G. Rohrer Children’s Playground at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The playground on North Park Drive in Pennsauken is one of the most frequented amenities within the county’s extensive parkland.

Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, who liaises with the Parks Department, commented on the renovation: “This playground has been well loved for many years, so it was time for some much-needed upgrades. We know how much this playground means to this community, and we are thrilled to welcome the public back, just in time for summer.”

The renovation project had a budget of $2.5 million and included several enhancements such as new playground and fitness areas with poured-in-place rubber and an underdrain system. Other improvements involved constructing new concrete sidewalks for pedestrian movement and installing various park amenities like a drinking fountain, waste receptacles, shade structures, picnic tables, benches, as well as electrical and plumbing work for a new irrigation system.

Commissioner Deputy Director Ed McDonnell highlighted the significance of these upgrades: “This is more than just a playground; it is a cherished place that thousands of children and families have flocked to for fun… Quality outdoor green spaces provide our residents with endless enrichment.”

The funding came from a $1.7 million grant by the state’s Green Acres Program and an additional $750,000 Urban Parks grant. Assemblyman Bill Moen emphasized their importance: “Parks and greenspaces are a cornerstone of community connection… This transformation will provide children and families of South Jersey a dependable place to play.”

Assemblywoman Melinda Kane added her thoughts on its impact: “This investment in the William G. Rohrer Children’s Playground is an investment in our families… I’m proud to join my colleagues in celebrating this beloved space where many memories have been made.”

Holli Carlin, a Camden County resident and blogger, praised the inclusivity offered by the updated facilities: “Parents are looking for places that work for their family… This park truly delivers on so many needs for local families.”

Cooper River Park spans 346 acres across several townships including Pennsauken and Cherry Hill. Apart from the playground, it offers numerous other amenities such as bike trails, sports fields, picnic areas among others. It was also named a Great Place in New Jersey by APA-NJ.
