The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee has moved forward with bipartisan legislation aimed at creating a Veterans Cares Commission. The bill, sponsored by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. (R-9) and Senator Raj Mukherji (D-32), seeks to address the challenges faced by military service members returning from active duty.

Senator Amato highlighted the difficulties that veterans often encounter in employment, housing, and healthcare access. “Far too often, service members returning home from active-duty face hurdles when it comes to employment, housing, and accessing healthcare,” said Sen. Amato. “This commission would give us critical insight into these issues so we can craft better policies to support the brave men and women who’ve served our country.”

The proposed legislation, known as S-4246, would establish an 11-member commission within the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The commission’s role would be to identify and evaluate issues impacting service members as they reintegrate into civilian life.

Additionally, the bill mandates that the commission submit an annual report detailing its findings and recommendations to both the Governor and Legislature.

Further information about the bill is available online.
