On Thursday, the Board of Commissioners and Mayor Victor Carstarphen gathered at City Hall to commemorate Juneteenth with a flag-raising ceremony.
“Juneteenth is a day for reflection and for celebration, as it marks the end of slavery and the beginning of progress in our nation,” Commissioner Al Dyer stated. “It is imperative that we come together to recognize the significance of this day and to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of the African American community.”
Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved individuals in Texas in 1865. This date marks when slavery officially ended in the United States. The day is also referred to as Freedom Day or Black Independence Day.
