On Saturday, a ceremony took place on the Battleship New Jersey to mark Flag Day and the 82nd anniversary of its commissioning. The event included a flag retirement ceremony and the presentation of the Honor Our Heroes Award to local veterans.

“Both the anniversary of the Battleship and Flag Day are important milestones that deserve to be celebrated,” said Commissioner Jennifer Fleisher. “I can’t think of a better way to honor both occasions than raising the stars and stripes on the deck of the most iconic battleship in United States history.”

The Battleship New Jersey was an active military vessel until 1991, serving through World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and conflicts in the Middle East. Launched on Pearl Harbor’s first anniversary, it has seen more combat action than any other battleship in U.S. history.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. It became an official holiday in 1949 through an act of Congress.
