On Saturday, the Board of Commissioners joined Cherry Hill Mayor David Fleisher and the Cherry Hill Township Council to commemorate Juneteenth. The event included a community parade, live entertainment, and local vendors.
“Juneteenth is a day of celebration, but it is also a day to recognize the immense struggles and sacrifices of the African American community; all of which have led to our progress in this country,” said Commissioner Jonathan Young. “In Camden County, we are committed to uplifting the Black community, honoring the past and building a brighter, more equitable future.”
Juneteenth marks June 19th, 1865, when the last slaves were emancipated in the United States and slavery officially ended. Texas was the final state to comply with emancipation and had 250,000 enslaved Black people until Juneteenth. The day is also referred to as Freedom Day or Black Independence Day.
