On Monday, the Board of Commissioners and the Camden Historical Society marked the start of a significant restoration project at the Benjamin Cooper Tavern. The $4 million initiative aims to convert the historic building into the American Revolution Museum of Southern New Jersey, with completion targeted before America’s 250th birthday in July 2026.

Originally built in 1734, the tavern holds historical importance as it was occupied by British troops from 1777 to 1778 and served as a site for two battles during the American Revolutionary War.

Commissioner Jeffrey Nash emphasized the importance of preserving this site: “The Benjamin Cooper Tavern is one of Camden City’s most significant historic sites, so it is imperative that we preserve it for generations to come.” He added that this project will help keep regional history alive and provide educational opportunities for residents and visitors. “We are thrilled to see this project move forward and cannot wait to visit the museum once it is completed.”

Funding for this project has been sourced from local, state, and federal contributions.
