To support senior citizens during the summer heat, the Board of Commissioners in Gloucester Township, NJ, is distributing free fans and window unit air conditioners. The initiative targets residents aged 60 and older with an income of $25,000 or less.

“We are finally getting into the summer weather here in Camden County and things are warming up quickly,” said Commissioner Virginia Betteridge. She emphasized the importance of ensuring seniors have access to cooling devices as temperatures approach 100 degrees. “This heat can be extremely dangerous, but the Division of Senior Services is working to ensure that no one will have to brace this heat without cooling measures.”

Eligibility criteria for receiving a fan or air conditioner include being at least 60 years old, not having a working air conditioning unit at home, and not having received a fan from Camden County in the past three years. Camden City residents needing fans can contact (856) 757-7285 or email humanservices@ci.camden.nj.us.

Senior citizens are advised to wear lightweight clothing, avoid strenuous activities under the sun, and consult their physician regarding medication effects in hot weather. It is also recommended to drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids to prevent dehydration.

Early signs of heat stress include decreased energy and faintness. More serious symptoms like unconsciousness or rapid heartbeat require immediate medical attention. In emergencies, dialing 911 is advised.

For more information or to request a fan or air conditioner, contact the Camden County Division of Senior Services at (856) 858-3220. Assistance with Low-Income Energy Assistance Program applications is also available through this department.

Additionally, Senior Citizens United Community Services Inc. and Comfort Partners offer help with air conditioning repairs at (856) 456-1121 and 1-888-773-8326 respectively.
