The Camden County Board of Commissioners has issued a statement marking the one-year anniversary of the Hamas invasion of Israel. The attack, which occurred on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and saw 250 individuals taken hostage. It is described as “the worst single day loss of life for Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

The Board’s statement reflects on the lasting impact of this event on the global Jewish community, describing it as “a day of infamy in international history.” They note that the trauma from that day continues to affect those in Israel and beyond, particularly because a resolution regarding hostages has not been reached.

Among those still held captive by Hamas in Gaza is Edan Alexander, who grew up in New Jersey. He is one of five American hostages mentioned by the Board. The Commissioners also highlighted how much of the violence was broadcasted live over social media platforms during the attack.

The statement calls for reflection and remembrance on this somber anniversary. The Board expresses its ongoing support for Israel and urges residents to pray for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and for the safe return of all hostages.
