On Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners and the Camden County Department of Public Works initiated a $1.6 million improvement project on Broadway in Camden City. This historic thoroughfare links Gloucester City to Camden City and is composed of both concrete and asphalt. The project is scheduled for completion during the summer construction season.

The work involves milling and paving Broadway from Chelton to Whitman Avenues, along with concrete repairs extending from Whitman Avenue to Stevens Street.

“These improvements are necessary to ensure that this major thoroughfare through the city of Camden can remain safe and passable for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” Commissioner Al Dyer stated. “Work will take approximately three months and during that time, there may be some disturbances to the flow of traffic. We ask travelers to please be patient, seek alternate routes and slow down around work areas.”

This initiative forms part of a larger $161 million infrastructure program planned for 2025 and 2026. Camden County faces numerous infrastructure needs across its 228 square miles due to its age. The program aims to allocate resources for ensuring highways, bridges, and byways are structurally sound, support multi-modal transportation, and maintain safety.

The Camden County Department of Public Works oversees over 1,200 miles of county roads, 50 bridges, and several dams. Their efforts focus on enhancing safety for motorists and pedestrians through highway construction projects and road maintenance activities like pothole repairs, street sweeping, grass cutting, and storm drainage upkeep. Located in Lindenwold, department personnel are available around the clock to serve residents.

“Like the reconstruction of 27th Street I can tell you driving down Broadway has been tough for motorists for years including myself,” Dyer added. “Residents and commuters are going to be overjoyed to see the county take on this project for everyone using this roadway.”
