The Camden County Board of Commissioners honored 14 residents on January 15 for their community contributions at the 2025 Camden County Freedom Medal Ceremony. This award, established in 2001, recognizes civic leaders who embody the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Each year, the board identifies individuals whose volunteer efforts have significantly improved their communities. Commissioner Jonathan Young stated, “The individuals selected for this prestigious award display true commitment to making the world a better place through actions such as community service, teaching, and more.”
This year’s recipients include Shakir Ali from Pennsauken, known for mentoring at-risk students and volunteering at Camp Bright Feathers; Colleen Bianco Bezich from Haddonfield, who champions diversity and inclusion; Sangeeta Doshi from Cherry Hill, active in numerous local organizations; Brian Gregg from Camden, a basketball coach who provides safe spaces for youth; Davida Jacobe-Hart from Sicklerville, involved in educational initiatives; Marilyn Segars Jamal from Clementon, supporting educational leaders; Lisa Lewis from Voorhees, focused on legal education programs; James J. Madden from Merchantville, aiding those with disabilities; Portia Simmons from Camden, an environmental justice advocate; Andrew Passalacqua from Cherry Hill, creator of Crayons for Courts project; Joyce Pierce from Lawnside, dedicated to education; and Michael and Kathleen VanStine from Gloucester Township who support veterans.
Additionally recognized is Commissioner Jonathan L. Young with the 2025 Camden County Congressional Award.
