The Camden County Commissioners announced on Apr. 8 the schedule of events for South Jersey 250, a regional initiative marking the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The announcement was made in collaboration with local leaders and aims to highlight the historical significance of South Jersey during this milestone year.

South Jersey 250 is designed to showcase the region’s role in American history while providing opportunities for residents and visitors to participate in educational programs, tours, and community celebrations. Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said, “Our proximity to Philadelphia places our region at the heart of our nation’s origin story and while our neighbor on the other side of the Delaware is recognized as the cradle of liberty, New Jersey has possibly a more impactful history when it comes to the founding of this country and our battle for independence.” Cappelli added that South Jersey 250 will serve as a central resource for information about events happening throughout Camden County and beyond.

Commissioner Jonathan Young described collaborative efforts with schools, municipalities, and historical societies: “Throughout the year, residents will have the opportunity to participate in educational programs, historical tours, community celebrations, and family friendly events that bring our shared history to life.” Young said these partnerships aim to make activities accessible across communities.

Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen emphasized Camden’s place in national history: “As we unveil South Jersey 250, the City of Camden, Camden County and all of our partners are ready to celebrate America’s 250th through the spring, summer, and beyond.” Assemblyman Bill Moen noted that national attention would focus on South Jersey during several major events including FIFA World Cup festivities: “South Jersey played a key role in the American Revolution and has made major contributions to United States history ever since… Thanks to our local, non-profit, and business partnerships, South Jersey is ready to meet the moment.”

Marshall Spevak from Battleship New Jersey highlighted unique experiences planned aboard what he called “the nation’s most decorated Battleship,” inviting visitors from around the world. Michael Snyder from Visit South Jersey said their goal is connecting people with regional Revolutionary War heritage: “Our goal through the South Jersey 250 initiative is to connect both residents and visitors with the history that shaped our region.”

According to the official website, Camden County supports over half a million residents across its 37 municipalities by advancing education initiatives as well as workforce development programs. The county maintains public facilities such as parks and libraries while offering services focused on health care access; transportation; economic development; public safety; nutrition centers; all overseen by a seven-member Board of Commissioners serving staggered three-year terms.
