The Camden County Board of Commissioners, in partnership with Upstream Alliance and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, has begun construction on a new kayak launch at Gateway Park in Camden City. The project aims to improve public access to the Cooper River and Delaware River back channels.

“These enhancements will provide increased access to Cooper River and the Delaware River back channels for Camden County residents,” said Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, liaison to Camden County Parks Department. “The Board of Commissioners is committed to creating spaces where our residents can enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and regain access to our most important waterways.”

The initiative involves an investment of nearly $930,000, with $800,000 contributed by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. Planned improvements include an ADA-accessible dock and floating platform designed for self-propelled vessels up to 25 feet long. Additional features will consist of improved parking areas, new walking paths, picnic spots, a pollinator garden, and interpretative signage.

An elevated boardwalk is also planned as part of the project. This structure is intended to protect the local environment by reducing soil disturbance and minimizing ecological impact during construction. The completion date for these upgrades is set for Spring 2026.
