On April 8, 2025, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) awarded the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (CCMUA) the Our Water’s Worth It Award. The ceremony, held in Camden, recognized CCMUA’s efforts in reducing combined sewer discharges and localized flooding through improvements in sewer and green infrastructure.
Commissioner Jeffrey Nash remarked, “The CCMUA has worked hard to improve flooding conditions and the quality of the local waterways here in Camden and that work has paid off.” He highlighted the organization’s significant investment in green flood mitigation methods to enhance the quality of life for the Cramer Hill residents.
The CCMUA’s approach includes a long-term control plan for managing sewer overflows and employing DEP-funded bioretention systems. These systems use trenches filled with sediment and native plants to filter out pollutants from rainwater, doubling as storm drains to manage street floodwaters.
Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez commented on the importance of CCMUA’s solutions, stating, “The CCMUA has come up with creative and innovate solutions to two major problems that were impacting this neighborhood, and the city at large.”
Launched in 2024, the Our Water’s Worth It campaign by DEP aims to promote awareness about the importance of water supplies in New Jersey. It focuses on the challenges faced and the measures taken to ensure clean drinking water and healthy waterways across the state.
Scott Schreiber, Executive Director of CCMUA, expressed gratitude for the recognition: “We are honored to receive such a prestigious award from the NJDEP.” He emphasized CCMUA’s dedication to protecting water quality and improving community life.
