Today, a bill introduced by Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco aimed at expanding health benefits coverage for prosthetic appliances was signed into law. The legislation, known as S-1439, mandates that health insurance plans cover an additional orthotic or prosthetic device if deemed necessary by a physician to allow individuals to participate in physical and recreational activities.

“As a cancer survivor myself, I’ve seen the struggles patients must endure when dealing with health-insurance companies,” stated Senator Bucco. “Now, with the Governor’s signature, we can lift that weight off of families’ shoulders so children and adults alike can live life to the fullest and make this process as seamless as possible while giving amputees the peace of mind they deserve when going through these tough times.”

The new law requires coverage from licensed orthotists, podiatrists, prosthetists, or certified pedorthists. It is designed to support those needing devices for activities such as running, bicycling, swimming, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and various sports.

The full text of the bill is available for public review.
