Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco has expressed concerns over a report indicating that New Jersey Transit’s (NJT) new headquarters may require additional space, leading to increased costs.
“New Jersey Transit’s decision to purchase a costly new headquarters has raised concerns from the beginning, and now they’re facing additional challenges that may raise costs for taxpayers once again,” said Sen. Bucco. “It’s clear that the decision to move forward was done without a sufficient cost-benefit analysis and the lack of transparency in the process only adds to these issues. The Murphy administration’s focus appears to have missed the mark when it comes to addressing the real needs of commuters. Moving forward, we need to prioritize efficiency, accountability, and affordability, rather than making questionable investments with taxpayer money without a clear plan or public input.”
Senator Bucco has been critical of what he perceives as waste and inefficiency within New Jersey Transit. In July 2023, he criticized the Murphy administration and NJT for lacking transparency regarding their deal with Onyx/Gateway for leasing the new headquarters.
Later in July 2023, Senator Bucco and Senator O’Scanlon sent a letter to then NJT President Kevin Corbett requesting documents related to the agency’s lease for their new headquarters.
In September 2024, Senator Bucco also questioned an NJT project concerning a facility intended for parking trains that exceeded its initial budget by $116 million.
