In response to the ongoing issues with the Local Public Employee Benefit Program, Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco has addressed a letter to Governor Murphy. In this letter, Bucco urges the governor to consider measures that could alleviate public employee health benefit costs for both property taxpayers and union employees.
Senator Bucco recommends that Governor Murphy reverse his early decision to disband the Pension and Health Benefits Review Commission. He also suggests directing the commission to meet and make recommendations on legislation that has not been reviewed in the past eight years. Additionally, he calls for a public hearing by either the State Health Benefits Commission or State Health Benefits Plan Design Committee to discuss reference-based pricing and other cost-saving strategies.
Bucco’s letter highlights concerns about transparency and access to information: “Your Administration’s decision to kill the commission almost 8 years ago has deprived stakeholders, the public, and legislators of information that Treasury uniquely possesses.” He emphasizes the need for legislative action supported by thorough vetting from relevant commissions.
Republicans have long advocated for alternative solutions to address what they describe as a collapsing program. They argue that it poses significant financial risks to both taxpayers and public workers. Past statements from Bucco and other Republicans have criticized proposals from Governor Murphy’s administration, highlighting perceived failures in managing state employee health care costs.
