Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco has responded to Governor Mikie Sherrill’s recent proposal for an online portal where the public can upload videos of immigration enforcement activities.
“When emotions are running high, responsible leadership is about de-escalation, clarity, and cooperation, not inflammatory proposals that could deepen the division,” said Sen. Bucco. “If the goal is to protect communities and ensure public trust, launching an online portal that encourages people to record and report immigration enforcement activity misses the mark and risks escalating an already heated situation.
Citizens should not be encouraged to interfere with or insert themselves into law enforcement operations. That kind of approach can escalate situations, put people at risk, and further erode trust. If the past has taught us anything, it’s that law enforcement agencies are not successful when they work in silos. Real public safety comes from coordination, communication, and strong community policing built on trust between officers and the people they serve.
I’ve said all along that we need to communicate with one another and at the end of the day, meaningful progress requires accountability from both sides at the state and federal level; law enforcement, government, and the public alike because without shared responsibility, we are not going to see real or lasting solutions. Leadership means getting in the same room, talking through concerns, identifying the root of the problem, and working toward real solutions. New Jersey can and should be a model for lowering the temperature, encouraging open communication, and building on the many positive efforts that are already underway to strengthen trust between our communities, government, and law enforcement.”
