Legislation sponsored by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. (R-9) has advanced in the New Jersey Senate Community & Urban Affairs Committee. The bill requires the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to resume the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation, and Mitigation (RREM) program for homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy.
If there are enough uncommitted funds available, the DCA will be directed to accept new grant applications and provide funding to homeowners who still need assistance with recovery and rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy.
“More than a decade after Superstorm Sandy devastated our state, too many families are still struggling to fully recover due to financial setbacks,” said Senator Amato. “This bill ensures that remaining RREM funds are used to help homeowners rebuild their lives, delivering the support they were promised.”
Senator Amato previously served as Mayor of Berkeley Township when Superstorm Sandy struck New Jersey. He noted that he saw firsthand the destruction caused by the storm and its lasting impact on local families.
Bill S-4812 is designed to allow homeowners who qualify as “Sandy-impacted”—including those who received FEMA rental assistance or were previously approved for RREM or Low-to-Moderate Income programs—to apply for grants addressing ongoing financial recovery needs.
